Day 1: Tunnel View — the first glimpse of the valley that stopped us in our tracks
Day 1: We finally made it. You drive through nearly a mile of darkness in the Wawona Tunnel, and when you come out the other side — the entire valley opens up like a painting that shouldn't be real. El Capitan on the left, Bridalveil Fall on the right, Half Dome floating in the distance. I had to pull over. This is the place.

Through binoculars we spotted climbers who'd been up there for days, sleeping on portaledges strapped to the wall. Then we chased waterfalls — Bridalveil, then Yosemite Falls at 2,425 feet. We stood in the spray, soaking wet, grinning like fools.

At the top — a football-field-sized granite summit, 8,839 feet up — we sat on the edge and stared at the valley 4,800 feet below. 16 miles round trip, 10 hours, worth every terrifying second.

Day 5: A rest day in Mariposa Grove. The Grizzly Giant is 1,800 years old, 96 feet around, and still growing. Its lowest branch is bigger than most trees. The bark is cinnamon-red, a foot thick, and fireproof — these trees evolved to survive what destroys everything else. Standing among them, we felt wonderfully small.

Half Dome turned gold, then orange, then purple. Twenty strangers stood shoulder to shoulder. Nobody spoke. Some things are bigger than words.

Day 7: I woke before the alarm and walked alone to Mirror Lake. Half Dome reflected in the water so clearly I couldn't tell which was real. A deer stepped out of the trees, drank, and disappeared. We stopped at Tunnel View one last time on the way out. Same valley, same granite. But we are not the same. Thank you, Yosemite. We'll be back.
